US-born figure skater Zhu Yi under attack after fall on Olympic debut for China

Zhu Yi, California-born but Chinese figure skater, is under massive criticism after making her Olympic debut for Team China. Zhu went on the stage as the first to compete in the figure skating team event, but tumbled throughout her performance and failed several jumps, dragging down China from the third place to the fifth place, which was just enough for Team China to progress to the next round.

Zhu Yi, after the race, said that she was feeling a lot of pressure because she knew many people were surprised with the selection for ladies’ singles and mentioned that she wanted to prove herself to the public, but she couldn’t.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, she gave up her American citizenship and decided to compete for China. However, the fact that she is not fluent with her Chinese is arousing criticism further. The attack against her seems even greater in contrast to the huge popularity of fellow California-born Eileen Gu, a freestyle ski prodigy in China. Unlike Zhu Yi, she has been gaining large popularity with her fluent Mandarin, even becoming unofficial face of China’s Winter Olympics.
